Life in an Historic District

Newcomers will often want to expand their houses - and get frustrated when that proves difficult. Some will point to another house and say "which can't I do that?" The answer is simple: in recent years, the zoning was changed in July 2008 to reduce the allowed density; and the street has been included in an historic district since September 1997.

Caroline Street is in the Greater U Street Historic District. The adjoining blocks are in that district, or the Sixteen Street District.

The oldest historic district in our area is Dupont Circle. You can read about the concept and general rules at The Dupont Circle Conservancy Web site.

The Historic Preservation Office is responsible for enforcing the rules for our district. Their 2010 handbook provides guidance on what you can and cannot do, and how to apply.
