Learning More About Waterways
If you are interested in learning more about the waterway network and its uses, there are several places to visit.
The Ronquières incline tower includes a museum of canal life. Open from Easter to end October. E19 exit 20, then north along the highway parallel to the canal.
The Centre didactique de l'eau in Seneffe (8, rue du canal - right by the old Charleroi canal - has an exhibit on the past, present and future of the waterways. E19 exit 20 and follow the signs to Seneffe.
The new barge lift at Strepy-Thieu incorporates an information center with an explanation of the reason for the construction of this enormous structure. E19 exit 22a and follow the lift signs (symbols) to the south.
Near the new lift are the four Victorian hydraulic lifts and museum of canal life. In the canal are several old barges.
On the riverside in the Steen in Antwerp is the National Maritime (Scheepvaart) Museum. Next to the Steen in a former freight shed there are a number of barges on display. (Unfortunately, many have no explanatory material at all.) And a few hundred meters to the north, in Bonaparte dock, there are several barges that you can visit.
